A workshop titled "Human Trafficking: National Efforts and Roadmap" will begin tomorrow, Sunday, at the Ministry Complex in Salalah. The workshop is organized by the National Committee for Human Trafficking at the Ministry of Justice in collaboration with the African Center for Peace Studies, Governance, and Democratic Transition. It aims to target committee members, representatives of ministries, local and international civil society organizations, and university professors.
Ms. Howaida Ali Awad Al-Karim, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Justice and Chair of the Committee stated that the workshop seeks to raise awareness about human trafficking and recent developments in criminal network activities, particularly as trafficking is a transnational crime. She highlighted that criminal networks are increasingly coordinating across borders with neighboring countries.
Al-Karim emphasized the importance of holding the workshop amid reports of human trafficking and the trafficking of organs and tissues, among other crimes. The Undersecretary explained that the workshop also aims to inform victims about how to report and protect them, as well as the agencies that can assist in addressing the crime, alongside raising awareness and engaging with partners regarding the emergency plan prepared by the National Committee for the upcoming year.
Ms. Howaida mentioned the national efforts made by the government to combat the crime, including signing the anti-trafficking agreement and issuing the Anti-Human Trafficking Law in 2014, which was amended to increase penalties. The Chair of the Committee expressed her hope that state agencies would adopt the recommendations of the workshop, especially since the country is in urgent need of cooperation to combat crime and ensure that Sudan does not become a hotspot for its spread.
