Geneva, October 25, 2024 - Sudan’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva submitted a strongly worded memorandum to the offices of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the President of the Human Rights Council, condemning the recent atrocities and retaliatory actions by rebel militia against civilians in East Al-Jazeera. These incidents have intensified since the surrender of militia leader Abu Aqila Kikel to the Armed Forces, resulting in the killing, terrorization, and displacement of innocent villagers.
The memorandum described these actions as blatant and systematic violations of international humanitarian and human rights law, including relevant protocols of the 1949 Geneva Conventions. Sudan’s mission urged the international community and human rights bodies to take a decisive stance against these ongoing abuses inflicted on defenseless civilians by the rebel militia.
