Minister of Justice Maulana Muawiya Othman Mohamed Khair reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing human trafficking issues and its ongoing efforts to combat this crime. He noted the continued national efforts, in cooperation with international partners, to address the associated risks.
Speaking at the opening session of an anti-human trafficking workshop at the Council of Ministers Hall in Port Sudan, the Minister acknowledged the work of the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking, which operates under the Ministry of Justice’s oversight. The committee was established in 2014 under the Anti-Human Trafficking Act of 2014.
He praised the roles played by the committee, chaired by Undersecretary of the Ministry of Justice, Maulana Howayda Ali Awad Al-Karim, in addressing organized trafficking, especially amid the current conflict involving the rebel Rapid Support Forces militia.
The Minister noted that the committee maintains close ties with international and regional organizations focused on trafficking prevention. He praised its achievements in advancing Sudan’s ranking from Tier 3 to Tier 2, despite the regional challenges and circumstances that have contributed to the rise of human trafficking.
