Khartoum Red Crescent celebrates World Food Day

The Red Crescent branch in Khartoum State celebrated World Food Day, accompanied by an exhibition showcasing types of Sudanese food and the challenges of food security caused by climate changes such as floods and droughts, in addition to conflicts that lead to displacement and difficulties in accessing food despite the abundance of agricultural resources.

Ahmed Simouza, Director of the Sudanese Red Crescent Society in Khartoum, remarked that this year’s celebration marked the first time the Khartoum branch officially observed World Food Day since the United Nations established it in 1979. Simouza underscored the celebration's goal of drawing attention to Sudan’s diverse food products and exploring their potential for growth to support food security. Badawi Hussein, representing the Branch Development Managers, highlighted the importance of prioritizing food security under Sudan's current circumstances, especially for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses. He pointed out that Sudan’s vast agricultural resources give it the potential to become a global “food basket,” capable of providing food security locally and contributing to global supply.
