United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned in the strongest terms the aerial attack carried out by drones from the rebellious Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia, targeting a logistics base belonging to the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) in the city of Kadugli, South Kordofan State.
The deadly attack resulted in the death of six peacekeepers from the Bangladeshi battalion and left eight others with varying injuries.
Additionally, a massive fire broke out, engulfing a main warehouse within the mission’s base.
Guterres described the attack as "appalling and unjustified," warning that attacks targeting peacekeepers may amount to "war crimes" under international law. He called for an immediate and comprehensive investigation to hold the perpetrators accountable.
For its part, the Government of Bangladesh expressed its deep shock and demanded that the United Nations ensure the provision of urgent medical support to the injured. This incident occurs as Kadugli witnesses escalating security tensions amidst an imposed siege and ongoing clashes in the region.
