Deputy Justice Minister of Sudan Holds Talks with Red Cross Leaders at Geneva Human Rights Council

Ms. Huwaida Ali Awad Al-Karim, the Deputy Minister of Justice and head of the Sudanese delegation participating in the 57th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, met with Mr. Patrick Youssef, the Regional Director for Africa at the International Committee of the Red Cross, and the Director of Operations for the Red Cross.

During the meeting, Ms. Huwaida provided an extensive overview of the Ministry of Justice's role in enacting legislation and ensuring its alignment with the international agreements ratified by Sudan. She elaborated on the responsibilities and functions of the National Committee for International Humanitarian Law, which include developing strategic plans and reports, as well as coordinating with organizations operating in the field of humanitarian law. Moreover, she emphasized the importance of raising public awareness of international humanitarian law, alongside efforts in training and capacity building.


Ms. Huwaida also acknowledged the challenges faced by the National Committee due to the current circumstances, while commending the International Committee of the Red Cross for its work in promoting the principles of international humanitarian law and providing vital assistance to those affected by wars and conflicts.


In response, Mr. Patrick expressed the committee's readiness to cooperate with all relevant national institutions, particularly through the National Committee for International Humanitarian Law, which oversees the coordination of the National Red Cross Committee's efforts in Sudan. He further emphasized the importance of providing training on international humanitarian law for law enforcement agencies and confirmed his willingness to provide technical support in this area.
