The Sudanese Coalition for Education for All launched today a birth registration campaign in the Red Sea State at Al-Ashi Model School and the Industrial School, which includes some displaced persons.
The campaign will cover 26 shelters in Port Sudan City and extend to seven localities throughout the Red Sea State, continuing until the end of December. UNICEF has pledged to establish seven civil registry offices in these localities to facilitate the registration of births. This campaign is being implemented in collaboration with UNICEF and the Civil Registry.
During the launch event at Al-Ashi Model School and the Industrial School, Mr. Naji Mansour Al-Shafei, the General Director of the Sudanese Coalition for Education for All, emphasized the campaign’s goals of registering all births and children in the Red Sea State, specifically targeting displaced persons and refugees. He noted that the campaign aims to assist approximately 40,000 families in its initial phase. To support these efforts, 73 civil registry officers and non-commissioned officers have been trained, along with 80 women leaders who will work to raise awareness about the importance of the registration process.
Naji noted that every child born in Sudan has the right to obtain a birth certificate and be registered in the birth registry. He pointed out that Sudan was chosen for this project to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (2030). He added that the media is targeted to play a greater role in raising awareness to ensure the campaign's success, stressing the importance of a strong role from the media alongside traditional leaders and health visitors.
