Port Sudan – The Zakat Board of Trustees announced during its third session of the current year in Port Sudan on Monday that the estimated Zakat collection for the first nine months reached 180 billion Sudanese pounds, achieving a collection rate of 113%.
Minister of Social Development and Chairman of the Supreme Council of Zakat Trustees, Mr. Ahmed Adam Bakheet, commended the significant role of the Zakat Bureau, particularly amid the war conditions the country has been experiencing since last year. He highlighted the bureau's steadfast commitment to fulfilling its responsibilities effectively.
During his address at the third session of the Zakat trustees' meeting, which included representatives from various states and department directors, sponsored by the Secretary-General of the Zakat Bureau in Sudan, and attended by three governors, Bakheet stated that the Zakat Bureau has successfully met all its regular and urgent obligations. He particularly noted its focus on supporting shelter centers, injured individuals, and patients.
Mr. Ali Al-Alo, the representative of the Secretary-General of the Zakat Bureau, confirmed that the collections during the first nine months reached 113%, with the highest contributions coming from agricultural Zakat. He pointed out that collection efforts were concentrated in seven states, while other states were completely or partially excluded due to the ongoing war.
Al-Alo revealed that 50% of the funding for war efforts was sourced from the "In the Way of God" fund. He also highlighted the Zakat Bureau's support for 1,630 shelter centers, amounting to 3.6 billion pounds, and the provision of 2.1 billion pounds for medical treatment, both locally and abroad. Additionally, 36,000 beneficiaries have received health insurance cards, with health insurance expenditures projected to reach 28 billion pounds by next year.
Furthermore, he mentioned the bureau’s recent focus on supporting voluntary return programs for citizens to areas that have become safe, with over 30 convoys departing from Gedaref State in recent times.
Additionally, Al-Alo mentioned that the Sudanese Zakat Bureau has been chosen by the African Coalition to represent social institutions from the continent at an upcoming conference in Cairo, Egypt.
