The meeting held by the Acting Governor of Kassala, Mr. Omar Othman Adam, with the Commission for Refugee Affairs in the eastern states emphasized the importance and necessity of establishing necessary measures to prevent and combat the phenomenon of refugee leakage from camps and their entry into cities, in full coordination with the state government and its official agencies.
During the meeting, key discussions focused on shared concerns impacting the state in relation to refugees, as well as the challenges faced by the commission, particularly workforce and employment difficulties caused by budget constraints. These challenges were exacerbated by the closure of commission offices in various states due to the ongoing war in the country.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Mohamed Al-Hafiz described the meeting as productive, noting that it resulted in mutual understanding with the state government. The discussions highlighted the issue of southern refugees residing in the Al-Shagarab camp and the difficulties posed by their movement from the camp into cities.
In his remarks, the Acting Governor underscored the importance of implementing regulations to curb this phenomenon in coordination with security agencies. He further emphasized the broader repercussions of the long-term presence of refugees in the state, noting the significant shortages in resources and the limited international support, particularly from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, in addressing the needs of refugees and camps in Kassala State.
