Mr. Al-Zain Ibrahim Hussein, Sudan's Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, opened a workshop in Addis Ababa to discuss Sudan's experience in mitigating natural disasters and addressing drought-related risks. The workshop was attended by more than nine representatives from Sudanese government institutions involved in disaster mitigation and early warning units, as well as representatives from other regional and international organizations.
In his opening remarks, Ambassador Al-Zain highlighted how natural disasters, especially drought, have been exacerbated by the ongoing conflict, which began with the Rapid Support Forces' actions against the state and citizens on April 15, 2023. This conflict has displaced around 12 million people from their homes. He noted that Sudan’s situation is further complicated by its suspended participation in AU activities, a decision taken in response to these challenging circumstances.
He affirmed that the workshop is being held in cooperation with the Sudanese government, represented by the African Risk Capacity (ARC), the World Food Programme, and the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, and it will play a crucial role in enhancing resilience to future disasters.
Running for five days, the event includes addresses from the Sudanese National Coordinator and the ARC Coordinator, both focusing on strategies to enhance resilience against natural disasters. Ambassador Al-Zain expressed appreciation to the African Risk Capacity and World Food Programme for their support, hoping the workshop’s results will bolster Sudan’s preparedness to handle future natural disasters effectively.
