Sairin meets in Geneva with Ms. Marta Costanzo, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees, and Migration

On the sidelines of his participation in the UNHCR Executive Committee meetings, Interior Minister Major General Khalil Basha Sairin met today with Ms. Marta Costanzo, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees, and Migration, at the United Nations Palace in Geneva.

During the meeting, the minister expressed the Sudanese government’s gratitude to the U.S. government for being the largest humanitarian aid donor in response to the crisis in Sudan. He welcomed the recent announcement of additional U.S. support, with approximately $424 million in humanitarian assistance allocated for those affected in Sudan and for neighboring countries hosting refugees.

The minister also praised the U.S. President’s decision to lift certain restrictions previously imposed on Sudan, allowing the country to receive American developmental aid and benefit from the U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Global Health Program.

He expressed hope that the U.S. government would take further steps to enable Sudan to access all developmental assistance provided by the U.S., which is urgently needed given the war imposed by rebel militias.

Ms. Costanzo expressed the United States' deep concern over the worsening humanitarian situation in Sudan and reaffirmed her country’s commitment to providing necessary support to alleviate the suffering of displaced persons and refugees. She also welcomed Sudan’s decision to open the Adré border crossing, expressing hope that the period allowing its use would be extended.

In response, the Interior Minister reiterated the Sudanese government’s commitment to facilitating the delivery of aid to all citizens affected by the conflict, including those in areas controlled by rebel forces.

Both parties emphasized the importance of coordination to ensure the efficient and timely delivery of humanitarian assistance to all those in need across Sudan.
