Continuation of the Water and Sanitation Project in Displaced Persons' Shelters in Dar Al-Salam

Last week, the Community Development Program Organization in North Darfur launched a water and sanitation project in the displaced persons' shelters at the headquarters of Dar Al-Salam locality. The project aims to provide clean drinking water to 570 families across 12 shelters in the locality, with support from UNICEF in partnership with the Ministry of Health, the state's Water and Sanitation Project, and in coordination with the State's Humanitarian Aid Commission.


Engineer Majdi Idris Adam Idris, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Community Development Program Organization, affirmed the organization's commitment to providing humanitarian services to the displaced in the shelters, who fled the horrors of war in search of safe havens. He emphasized that the water and sanitation project being implemented in the Dar Al-Salam locality is one of the most important initiatives aimed at alleviating the suffering of displaced persons in their quest for clean drinking water, which is essential for human life.

He revealed that the water and sanitation project will be carried out in two phases. The first phase, which will continue until the end of November, targets the operation of five water stations, the maintenance and rehabilitation of seven water stations in the Zamzam Camp shelters for displaced persons, and the distribution of drinking water to newly displaced families in four shelters at Zamzam Camp in El Fasher. This phase targets 750 displaced families. In addition, two training sessions will be held for 60 health promoters in the Zamzam Camp shelters in El Fasher and the displaced persons' shelters in Dar Al-Salam. Clean drinking water will also be distributed to 570 families across 12 shelters in Dar Al-Salam locality. Engineer Idris disclosed that the total cost of the first phase amounts to 86 million Sudanese pounds.


The second phase will include the construction and maintenance of 300 latrines in the Zamzam Camp shelters in El Fasher and Dar Al-Salam locality, as well as the continuation of water distribution in the shelters and organizing training sessions for health promoters in the shelters of Zamzam and Dar Al-Salam. He mentioned that the total cost of the second phase of the water and sanitation project amounts to 320 million Sudanese pounds. He noted that the project has brought joy to the displaced persons who had long struggled to access drinking water, and he praised UNICEF for its support of this vital project. He also urged UNICEF to provide more support for the implementation of the second phase, especially given the urgent need for drinking water and sanitation services among the displaced in the shelters.


In the following context, the displaced persons in the shelters at the headquarters of Dar Al-Salam locality expressed their gratitude to the Community Development Organization and UNICEF for providing drinking water. They stated that they had suffered greatly in the past to obtain clean water and called on UNICEF to continue the water and sanitation project to provide a permanent solution to the drinking water problem.
