The letter addressed the potential for Sudan's return to IGAD.
Yesterday, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, received a letter from President Ismail Omar Guelleh of Djibouti concerning the bilateral relations between their countries and ways to strengthen them.
This came during his meeting yesterday at his office with the Djiboutian President's envoy and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, in the presence of Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Hussein Awad.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Hussein, stated in a press briefing that the meeting discussed the bilateral relations between the two countries on both regional and international levels. The meeting also touched on the possibility of Sudan's return to IGAD. He added that there was an extended discussion between the Chairman of the Sovereignty Council and the Djiboutian President's envoy regarding the mistakes and negative actions IGAD has taken concerning Sudan. He emphasized that Sudan's relationship with Djibouti should remain separate from its relations with IGAD until the organization acknowledges its past mistakes and corrects its stance regarding Sudan.
Ambassador Awad further noted that President Guelleh’s letter expressed hope for Sudan's return to IGAD, emphasizing the ability of member states to overcome the current challenges. Both leaders agreed to study the matter further.
Djibouti’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, affirmed that his country is closely following the developments in Sudan. He expressed regret for the hardships faced by the Sudanese people due to the ongoing war and condemned the actions of rebel forces against civilians. He remarked that victory for the Sudanese Armed Forces is becoming evident, and Sudan will soon regain its regional influence, particularly within IGAD, where it plays a foundational role.
He also mentioned that the meeting with the Chairman of the Sovereignty Council addressed the growing Sudanese-Djiboutian relations, emphasizing Sudan’s pivotal role. The Djiboutian President, as the Chairman of IGAD, wanted to send a message to his brother General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, encouraging Sudan to return as an influential member of IGAD to help the organization achieve its goals with greater strength and resilience.
In closing, the Djiboutian Minister congratulated the Sudanese people on the successes of the armed forces, the restoration of control, and their progress in overcoming the current crisis.
