Prominent Arab writer and journalist Abdel Bari Atwan has launched a fierce attack on Sudanese opposition forces, describing their role in the current crisis as destructive and inflammatory, while warning against repeating scenarios that have led to the devastation of other Arab nations.
Addressing the unfolding situation in Sudan, Atwan drew a stark and controversial comparison between the current Sudanese opposition and the actions taken by the Iraqi opposition prior to the 2003 invasion.
He pointed out that the common denominator between the two groups is a methodology of relying on adversaries and foreign powers for support—a trajectory that previously resulted in the destruction of the Iraqi state and the dissolution of its military and security institutions.
Atwan asserted that resorting to foreign agendas to undermine internal political rivals does not constitute a national struggle; rather, it is a recipe for the country's destruction and its transformation into an arena of perpetual chaos. He strongly criticized voices inciting against sovereign state institutions and opening the door to international intervention.
Atwan’s remarks come at a time when Sudan is witnessing acute polarization, amidst diverging regional and international stances regarding the means to resolve the crisis.
