The acting Governor of Kassala, Major General (Retired) Al-Sadiq Mohamed Al-Azraq, held a meeting with the state’s Minister of Health, Dr. Ali Adam, and the Director of Emergencies and Epidemics, Imtiaz Atta, to review the health situation in Kassala, focusing on the recent cholera outbreak.
The minister provided a detailed briefing on the ministry’s efforts, in collaboration with the state government, to combat the disease, which has led to a significant reduction in cases. He also noted that, in addition to cholera, the state experienced an outbreak of dengue fever, which is endemic to the region and caused by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, particularly after every rainy season.
The minister explained that the state has faced exceptional circumstances due to the influx of large numbers of displaced people, which has greatly impacted the current situation and increased pressure on the state's healthcare services, especially its hospitals. These facilities are now providing services to displaced people from war-affected areas.
He highlighted the measures taken to combat disease vectors, environmental health campaigns, and emergency responses, as well as public awareness programs aimed at educating citizens. The minister urged the public to play an active role in combating the Aedes mosquito by drying out water containers in and around homes to prevent breeding.
To address the situation, the minister outlined various initiatives, including vector control measures, environmental health campaigns, emergency responses, and public awareness efforts to educate citizens about preventive actions. He urged residents to assist in mosquito control by ensuring water containers around their homes are emptied to prevent breeding grounds.
He further announced the launch of an aerial spraying campaign starting today, which will target all neighborhoods in Kassala City to eliminate flying insects, including flies and mosquitoes. This effort is being coordinated by Kassala locality and the Ministry of Production and Economic Resources and will be complemented by ground spraying campaigns to ensure comprehensive control.
The minister reassured the public that medical supplies and treatments are available in sufficient quantities. In response, the governor called for continued vigilance in combating diseases and praised the ministry and its partners for their efforts in addressing the cholera outbreak.
Additionally, the governor shared details of his recent meeting with the federal Minister of Health, who commended Kassala’s swift response to the cholera crisis and its ongoing health initiatives.
